EMERGENCY is an independent and neutral association founded in 1994 to offer free and high quality medical-surgical treatment to victims of wars, anti-personnel mines and poverty. Since then, we have worked in 18 countries treating over 10 million people.
We take care of people, well and for free
We are doctors, surgeons, nurses and we treat the victims of war and poverty. We believe that the right to care is a fundamental human right: this is why we guarantee our patients free and quality care, without discrimination.
We build hospitals, offer training and work
We design and build hospitals to offer patients safe, clean and well-kept environments. We equip each hospital with a garden, play areas for children and meeting places: our hospitals are beautiful and respectful of the environment, as well as functional, because beauty recognizes respect and dignity.
We intervene in emergencies, but we also look a little further: our international staff offers local staff theoretical and practical training so that they can become autonomous and independent. Some of our hospitals are recognized training centres by local health authorities. In this way we want to contribute to the growth and sustainability of national health systems.
We are in Italy and in the world, next to those in need
We are in Afghanistan and Iraq, to treat the wounded of an endless war and anti-personnel mines. We are in Sierra Leone, Sudan, Eritrea, Uganda to promote excellent healthcare with free and highly specialized medical centres. We are also in Italy: with fixed and mobile clinics we offer socio-health assistance to the poor, and to the needy and migrants. From the outskirts of Milan to Castel Volturno, from the earthquake zones of central Italy to the agricultural areas of Ragusa.
EMERGENCY's response to Covid-19
During the health emergency in Italy we made available our staff and the skills gained in Sierra Leone with the Ebola epidemic. The intervention took place on several fronts: from the prevention of contagion to the treatment of patients in intensive care, to the help of people at risk or in quarantine.
We promote a culture of peace and human rights
Alongside humanitarian activity, EMERGENCY actively promotes a culture of peace and respect for human rights through events, school meetings, exhibitions, documentaries, theatrical performances, books, and publications.
We can do all this thanks to donors who have decided to stay by our side. And we will continue to do it every day, as long as it is needed.
